Glenburnie Market Report 9/8/23

A day of mixed result for vendors for the reduced yarding of 489 cattle (numbers usually fall the week of a store sale). Last weeks cow sale was the dearest market in Southern Australia and the market corrected this week to that of two weeks ago to be over 20c per kg cheaper. The mixed run of heavy steers was fully firm, while the young cattle traded at reduced rates.

BULLS: Sold at 9am by Auctioneer Jordy Heinrich. A larger run of beef bulls sold to more competition to be slightly dearer than last week. The better heavy bulls made 200-240c per kg with plainer types 175-205c per kg.

Quotations: Peucker Farms Her Bulls 232c 940kg $2180 and 230c 1015kg $2334. Tarcoola Her bull 220c 865kg $1903.  

HEAVY STEERS & BULLOCKS:     Drafted & Presented by Auctioneer Andrew Whan and Jordy Heinrich.    Processors and feeders operated on the heavy steer yarding at rates similar to last week. The quality was good although the numbers in the pens were less. The best quality bullocks made 290-310c per kg with dairy cross types 220-245c per kg and straight Friesian 200-238c per kg.

YOUNG CATTLE:     Drafted & Presented by Auctioneer Peter Creek and Scott Miller.  A very tough yearling sale that saw the majority of the yarding being either heavy heifers or trade heifers. All the usual buyers were present, but all operated at reduced rates, being 15-20c per kg back on last week. There were very few vealers offered. The heavy heifers over 500kg made 240-275c per kg while trade heifers made 245-320c per kg.

COWS:     Drafted & Presented by Auctioneer Liam Durcan and Jordy Heinrich. The cows lost last weeks gain (where the cow market was the dearest in Southern Australia) to be firm on the previous week. The best medium/heavy beef cows made 220-260c per kg were lighter types made 180-205c per kg.

Quotations: Roxley Park Ang x cows 255c 625kg $1595 and 244c 541kg $1321. Tarcoola Her cows 206c 516kg $1063.

SHEEP & LAMBS:     Drafted & Presented by Auctioneer Liam Durcan & Jordy Heinrich. A better-quality yarding of sheep and lambs came forward this week. Buyer competition was still subdued, consistent with reports from other selling centres. The better end of the kill lambs made $100 to $132 with secondary types selling from $45 to $84. Limited numbers of sheep made $50 to $70.

Cattle prices improved with manufacturing steers and cows having the biggest price increase of up to 20c per kg. Yearlings remained solid with heifers 331c per kg, Angus bullocks 325c per kg and cows up to 290c per kg. 

BULLS: Sold at 9am by Auctioneer Jordan Heinrich Another large yarding of bulls this week. Quality was not as good as previous weeks which led to cheaper trends with the best bulls making 240c per kg with most making 210-220c per kg.  

Quotations: P.S Peucker Her bull 240c 1060kg $2544.

BULLOCKS:     Drafted & Presented by Auctioneer Andrew Whan and Liam Durcan. 121 bullocks yarded with quality very mixed and many with winter coats. Best Angus bullocks sold 325c per kg with Hereford and colour bullocks selling to 312c per kg. Manufacturing dairy steers sold to keen competition to sell 10c dearer on only the well finished prime steers.

Quotations: MJ Cleaver Caveton 20 Poll Her bullocks sold to 312c $1894. Braelee Pastoral Dairy x bullocks 280c $1958.  

YOUNG CATTLE:     Drafted & Presented by Auctioneer Peter Creek and Jordy Heinrich. 198 yearling and vealers yarded and like the bullocks the quality was very mixed with keen competition on prime young cattle. Grassfed yearling heifers sold to 331c per kg with most heifers selling between 250-300c per kg. Inferior bred steers sold from 220-320c per kg.

Quotations: Tarcoola grassfed Hereford heifers 272c $1382. KJ & MJ Mountford Angus x heifers 331c $1287.

COWS:     Drafted & Presented by Auctioneer Liam Durcan and Jordy Heinrich. 211 cows yarded in very strong sale with beef trim and the lower Australian dollar causing a strong demand.  Best beef cows sold 10-20c per kg dearer than last market selling to 290c per kg.

An improved quality yarding this week with less secondary, plainer types yarded. Only 265 cattle came forward selling to a full field of buyers at rates fully firm to dearer than last week (quality was definitely a factor in the rise).

BULLS: Sold at 9am by Auctioneer Jordan Heinrich A much larger run of beef bulls, sold to much stronger competition to see bulls of all weights 10-20c per kg dearer than last week. Heavy beef bulls 250-270c per kg while younger 2y.o bulls 245-255c per kg.

Quotations: Hayman Partners Ang bull 260c 1035kg $2691. Peucker Farm Poll Hereford bulls 270c 950kg $2565 and 895kg $2416. P.S Peucker young Her bulls 245c 760kg $1862.

HEAVY STEERS & BULLOCKS:     Drafted & Presented by Auctioneer Andrew Whan and Liam Durcan.  A smaller, better-quality yarding of heavy steers and bullocks that consisted of mainly coloured cattle. These sold at fully firm rates of 268-305c per kg. There were only a few manufacturing type steers, and these sold to 240c per kg.

Quotations: Woolwin Farming Lim x strs 305c 596kg $1763 and 300c 638kg $1915. FP & SD Smaling Her strs 305c 596kg $1818.

YOUNG CATTLE:     Drafted & Presented by Auctioneer Peter Creek and Scott Miller. It was the smallest run of young cattle for some time with mainly only grassy heifers penned. The trade weighted heifers made 280-310c per kg, while the heavy heifers over 500kg made 260-298c per kg.

Heavy export lambs made from $125 to $144. Trade lambs made $70 to $118. Light lambs made $35 to $65 and the small number of sheep sold from $40 to $70.

All the major buying group of processors, feedlots and restockers were in attendance with the cattle market still lacking winter mojo with prices dipping in a very mixed quality yarding. Bullocks sold between 260-320c per kg. Young steers 210-320c per kg. Grassfed heifers topped at 335c per kg whilst the cow market was solid, with best beef cows 225-260c per kg.

BULLS: Sold at 9am by Auctioneer Jordan Heinrich. A small run of bulls with trends being dearer this week. Best bulls made 250c per kg with most sales between 230-240c per kg.

BULLOCKS:     Drafted & Presented by Auctioneer Andrew Whan and Liam Durcan. 121 bullocks yarded with the usual buying gallery in attendance but not all operating with prices easing to sell between 260-320c per kg. Manufacturing dairy steers made 246c per kg.

YOUNG CATTLE:     Drafted & Presented by Auctioneer Peter Creek and Jordy Heinrich.  162 yearling and vealers yarded in a very mixed and plainer offering. Restockers and feedlots purchased at lower rates with the best grassfed heifers topping the market at 325c per kg returning $1279.

Quotations: KJ & MJ Mountford Penola 14 grassfed yearling heifers 325c $1279. NB & BJ Baker young manufacturing bulls 235c $984.

COWS:     Drafted & Presented by Auctioneer Liam Durcan and Jordy Heinrich.  181 cows yarded with some good quality heavy beef cows coming forward. These were dry high yielding types with the best beef types selling to 260c per kg being fully firm on last week with light chopper cows 120-200c per kg.

JULY STORE SALE REPORT 14/7/22: 1600 cattle yarded with an increased demand for weight and better lines of well-bred cattle, although there was still an odd pen showing a winter coat due to the ongoing wet conditions. Feedlot demanded the heavy weight cattle with Southeast graziers buying the lightweight steers and heifers. Steers weighing between 350-450kg sold $1400 to $1680. 300-350kg steers made $1150 to $1420. Light weight steers 230-280kg $600 to $1020. Heavy weight heifers over 400kg $1150 to $1300. Weaned heifers 270-320kg $750 to $950. Very light weight heifers $550 to $700.

A day of mixed results for vendors at Glenburnie this week. Prices were generally softer for the yarding of 417 head compared to last weeks much stronger market. Quality was not as good as last week, but all the usual buyers were in attendance and operated.Please note the monthly store cattle sale 10am today- 2000 advertised.

BULLS: Sold at 9am by Auctioneer Jordan Heinrich. A smaller run of bulls today with the best beef bulls making 220-240c per kg to make a dearer market.

Quotations: KJ & MJ Mountford Her bull 240c 920kg $2208. Peucker Farms Her bull 230c 755kg $1736 and 695kg $1598. Braelee Pastoral SH Bull 220c 725kg $1595.

HEAVY STEERS AND BULLOCKS:     Drafted & Presented by Auctioneer Andrew Whan and Scott Miller. The heavy steers and bullock sale was firm to 5c per kg easier on last week’s better rates, with quality not up to standard. The best medium to heavy steers 288-325c per kg with both processors and heavy feeder orders active. Dairy Beef x strs 220-265c per kg while Friesians made 170-238c per kg.

Quotations: JL & NS Fartch Yahl Her ox 295c 602kg $1776 and 280c 720kg $2016. MR Jennings Ang Frs strs 230c 550kg $1760 and Frs strs 235c 583kg $1370.

YOUNG CATTLE:     Drafted & Presented by Auctioneer Peter Creek and Scott Miller. The young cattle yarding consisted of mainly heavy grass yearling heifers. These traded at 272-290c per kg or 5-10c per kg cheaper. Trade weight heifers 265-300c per kg. The yearling steers were purchased by feeder orders 300-345c per kg and the few vealers offered made up to 344c per kg.

COWS:     Drafted & Presented by Auctioneer Andrew Whan and Scott Miller. A cheaper cow sale this week being 10-15c per kg less than last week’s much stronger rates (Mt Gambier was the strongest cow sale of the week). The overall quality was not as good as last week.

Improved quality and numbers met with improved price with 477 cattle coming froward in a dearer sale. With good rain for the week and the promise of more to come we are having a good start to winter.

BULLS: Sold at 9am by Auctioneer Jordan Heinrich. A reduced yarding of bulls this week with prices being firm to dearer on last week. Best bulls made 220c per kg with most sales being between 200-215c per kg.

HEAVY STEERS AND BULLOCKS:     Drafted & Presented by Auctioneer Andrew Whan and Liam Durcan A much stronger sale this week with heavy steers and bullocks 5-15c per kg stronger, while the manufacturing types were 15-25c per kg dearer. Processors and heavy feeder orders all tried to secure numbers. Heavy feeder orders operated at rates of 298-330c per kg while processors were at 285-325c per kg. Manufacturing steers realised 230-255c per kg.

Quotations: Colden Park topped the MWJ run with prime heavy Angus bullocks 325c 757kg $2462 and 315c 803kg $2530 as well as Her ox 308c 657kg $2025. J Reed heavy Ang steers 308c 562kg $1733.

YOUNG CATTLE:     Drafted & Presented by Auctioneer Peter Creek and Scott Miller. A better-quality run of yearling cattle this week with more prime grass heifers coming forward. Trade buyers and feedlotters were all active, at dearer rates. The small offering of vealers made 320-350c per kg mixed sex. Yearling steers realised 330-340c per kg while the good run of trade heifers made 230-335c per kg.

Quotations: Heavy Ang hfrs A/c MW & MA Patzel 292c 640kg $1868 and Her hfrs 245c 426kg $1045. J Reed Ang Strs 286c 368kg $1052.

COWS:     Drafted & Presented by Auctioneer Liam Durcan and Andrew Whan. A very good run of heavy beef cows saw the biggest price lift. The best medium/heavy beef cows made 242-268c per kg, this being 15-25c per kg dearer than last week. Lighter beef cows made 160-230c per kg.

This week saw more of a positive note with small price gains on the improved quality on heavy bullocks and prime cows. For young cattle it was a mixed bag with feedlots still shaping the price outcome with restockers still weary.

BULLS: Sold at 9am by Auctioneer Jordan Heinrich. A large yarding of bulls today with the best beef bulls making 220c per kg with most sales 190c to 200c per kg.

Ang Frs X Strs made 250-260c per kg returning up to $1482



Numbers increased this week at Mt Gambier to 285 cattle. It is however getting increasingly hard to get trucks into some yards as the wet weather continues. The best autumn start in years has turned into the wettest start to winter for some time. The cattle market was at least firm to dearer depending on the class of the livestock. The usual field of buyers were present, but they were selective on their bidding.

Supply tight with winter here. The eastern young cattle indicator continues to ease back. 124 cattle yarded with bullocks selling to 328c per kg, few vealers to 355c per kg, grassfed yearlings 255 to 305c per kg. Beef cows 215 to 228c per kg, lighter chopper cows 120 to 180c per kg and bulls to 226c per kg. Prices continued to ease on bullocks and young cattle with cow price equal on last weeks sale.

A limited number of sheep and lambs were offered this week. Lambs sold from $129-$170 with an exceptional pen of heavy weight lambs selling to $215. Sheep made $50-$100.

GLENBURNIE LIVESTOCK REPORT - 7/6/23

Very wet conditions and the promise of more rain for the yarding of 406 cattle this week.  The quality of the cows and bullocks improved this week, but the young cattle were again very mixed for both breed and type.  The best quality cattle sold to fully firm rates (with cows 5-10c dearer) but secondary types met subdued interest.

BULLS:  Sold at 9am by Auctioneer Jordy Heinrich

The small offering of beef bred bulls sold from 170-190c per kg.

Top end quality was better this week, with some excellent pens of Angus steers penned.  Prices were fully firm on last week.  Heavy feeders and processors all operated from 282-348c per kg.  Very few dairy types were seen.

Quotations: Kent Props Ang steers 337c 492kg $1659 and 340c 523kg $1779.  MJ Cleaver Her x steers 282c 517kg $1459.  B Dickson MG Frs steers 235c 547kg $1286.

A very plain, mixed run of young cattle with a big percentage having dairy influence.  Feeders and trade buyers were active where quality suited at rates fully firm to last week.  The secondary types met limited buyer interest with many going to local restockers.  Grown heifers over 500kg 238-284c per kg.  Yearling steers sold to both feedlot and trade orders 320-345c per kg.  Trade heifers 300-322c per kg.  There were very few vealers to quote.
