GLENBURNIE LIVESTOCK REPORT 31/5/2023

All the regular buyers were in attendance this week however most of these were onlookers and not active in the sale.  There was no joy in the cattle prices with a further drop of 15-30c per kg on all classes of livestock.  Best Angus bullocks 345c, grown heifers 220-300c per kg.  Yearling steers 255-319c per kg.  Heavy beef cows 200-228c per kg.

A smaller yarding of better quality bulls with the best bulls making 230c, with most of the sale being 200-220c per kg. 

HEAVY STEERS & BULLOCKS:  Drafted & Presented by Auctioneer Andrew Whan and Liam Durcan

90 bullocks yarded.  A limited number of Angus and Hereford bullocks sold to 345c in a very depressed market.  Friesian steers sold to 200c per kg.

Large numbers of cattle in the north coming into both the Saleyards and meatworks continue to have a downward effect on our southern prices.  Export grades were the most effected and were hit with falls of 15-30c per kg.  Yearling cattle were also softer, with prices 5-15c per kg back on last week.  508 came forward, an increase of 214, this being caused by the larger run of beef cows.

Bull prices have softened, with a general run of bulls making 180-215c per kg, topping to 280c per kg.

HEAVY STEERS & BULLOCKS:  Drafted & Presented by Auctioneer Andrew Whan and Liam Durcan

A smaller run of heavy steers and bullocks this week, that lacked the quality of recent markets.  Exporters and feeders operated at rates lower than the last sale.  Heavy steers to feed made 330-362c per kg, while processors paid 308-320c per kg.  A few pens of dairy steers came forward making 190-246c per kg.

YOUNG CATTLE:  Drafted & Presented by Auctioneer Peter Creek and Scott Miller

Again a mixed run of young cattle, with trade buyers, feedlotters and restockers all operating but at reduced rates.  The yearling steers were purchased by restockers at rates of 360-380c per kg.  The heavy heifers over 500kg made 260-310c per kg while trade heifers made 290-338c per kg.  A few vealers were penned and these made 380-400c per kg.

Kent Properties 12 Friesian Steers made 247c returning $1516.87





A small yarding of very mixed cattle.  Quality was scarce and prices remained firm on last weeks lower rates.  All the regular buyers attended however not all were active.  The best of the vealers sold to 431c, Angus bullocks 370c, yearling heifers to 340c, beef cows to 270c.

A large run of bulls this week with all processors in attendance with best beef bulls making to 250c while most sales ranged from 180-240c per kg.

80 bullocks yarded, with more younger two tooth bullocks yarded.  The better Angus bullocks sold to 370c, manufacturing dairy steers 230-250c per kg.

Again another larger than advertised yarding came forward.  All feedlot operators bid at lower levels in line with all prime markets.  General run of steers 400-500kg made $1660 to $1900.  280-380kg made $1200 to $1500.  Friesian steers $400 to $1150.  Weaner type heifers $900 to $1200.  The better cows and calves $1800 to $2350.

BRAELEE PASTORAL CO. HEAVY DAIRY COWS WEIGHED 715KG AND RETURNED $1716


A week of lower prices at all selling centers, helped by much larger yardings in the North, saw a smaller yarding at Glenburnie this week. Cattle prices have been under pressure in NSW and this is now taking effect in the South. Prices were generally 15-25c per kg back on last week. Only 346 were yarded, with many cattle held for this Friday Store Sale where over 2000 will be yarded.

Cold conditions greeted agents and buyers on a Wednesday with heavy rain until late morning.  Quality and numbers declined and prices eased over all classes of cattle.  Yearling steers 322-401c per kg,  heifers 340-388c per kg, bullocks 325-370c per kg, cows 248-285c per kg.

A small run of bulls with the better beef bulls selling to 260c per kg.

There will be no market Next Week due to ANZAC DAY.

LEST WE FORGET. 


The largest field of buyers seen for some time competed for the increased yarding of 570. Quality was mixed with some better quality yearlings and cows offered. There were some mixed price trends, with the export classes at least fully firm to dearer while the young cattle did not reach the highs of last week.

A stronger market this week, with price increases of 10-20c per kg as processors tried to secure numbers due to the lack of markets next week. 365 cattle were offered, and quality did improve in some classes. Competition opened up stronger and continued right the way through all classes.

A small run of beef bulls sold at fully firm rates to last week 230-260c per kg for the better bulls.

A larger, better quality run of bullocks and steers with a good selection of all weights and grades. Prices rebounded after last weeks cheaper market to see increases of 10-20c per kg, due to the at times spirited competition. The best grown steers and bullocks made 350-378c per kg. Crossbred steers 290-360c per kg and Friesian steers 265-295c per kg.

Quotations: J Croser & Sons offered 3 pens of very good, vendor bred Shorthorn steers. 20 at 365c 520kg, 19 at 373c 572kg and 7 at 355c 670kg $2381. Again a very small plain yarding that comprised of a large proportion of dairy cross cattle. Prices for the better quality beef cattle improved. Trade steers 350-372c per kg, trade heifers 330-372c per kg and no vealers to quote.

Small yarding at Mount Gambier this week. More plainer and inferior cattle yarded all selling to softer trends. Bullock prices were sold for manufacturing dairy steers with the best beef bullocks 5 to 10c easier, selling between 340-352c per kg. Yearling cattle sold 30 to 50c per kg easier due to the lack of quality and no feedlot competition. Cows remain firm on heavy weights however 5 to 15c cheaper on light and medium weight cows and best cows sold to 300c per kg.

A short bull run with best bulls making 250c per kg and bulls ranging from 210-250c per kg.

56 bullocks yarded. The best prime Angus bullocks sold to 352c per kg and manufacturing dairy steers remained firm at 285-300c per kg.

86 cows yarded prices remain solid for the best beef cows however 5 to 15c cheaper on light and medium weight cows. Best beef cows made to 300c per kg with medium weight cow 260-280c per kg and light weight cows 150-200c per kg.

Due to Lamb and Sheep prices easing in previous weeks with processors dealing with a shortage of kill space and due to a high number of lambs leading into the Easter break. Only a very small number of lambs were offered at Mount Gambier this week with insufficient numbers to be able to form a report.

Kent Properties Ang Frs Steers 368c 589kg $2168





A much smaller yarding this week following the long weekend. 314 total yarding comprising 14 bulls, 115 steers, 133 young cattle and 50 cows. Quality is now becoming very mixed, with more secondary types coming through. Price trends were mixed with the bullocks firm to easier, yearlings firm while cows were 10c easier.

BULLS: Sold at 9am by Auctioneer Jordan Heinrich

A small yarding of 14 beef bulls that sold from 230-260 c per kg.

HEAVY STEERS AND BULLOCKS:     Drafted & Presented by Auctioneer Andrew Whan and Scott Miller.

A small yarding of heavy steers and bullocks that saw the better beef types fully firm on last week at rates 350-380c per kg. Some beef dairy x steers were 15c per kg cheaper at 295-320c per kg.

A good run of  Friesian steers reduced 292-308 c per kg back 10c per kg on week. 

Quotations: MJ Cleaver Speckle strs 363c 543kg $1972. T & K Paynter’s Her strs 352c 602kg $2121. KJ & MJ Mountford topped the bullock run with their Ang x ox 380c 622kg $2364. MWJ clients offered a good run of Frs strs. MJ Cleaver 292-308c per kg to $1774 and Kent Properties 288-308c per kg topping at $1700.

YOUNG CATTLE:     Drafted & Presented by Auctioneer Peter Creek and Liam Durcan.

A very small and mixed yarding, that sold at firm rates to last week. The heavy heifers over 500kg 300-342c per kg, trade steers 395-460c per kg, trade heifers 360-410c per kg. A small run of milk vealers ranged from 370-405c per kg mixed sex.

A very small sale of only 50 cows sold to the usual field of export buyers, at rates 10c lower than last week. The best medium/heavy beef cows 278-302c per kg while lighter beef cows made 220-260c per kg.

Quotations: RK & SM Johnson Poll Her cows 278c 768kg $2126 and 290c 720kg $2088. CT Roberts Ang cows 278c 770kg $2140 and 290c 675kg $1957.

A very small yarding of lambs sold to cheaper rates consistent with what has been happening at other selling centers. A small number of killable lambs 22-26kg sold from $160 to $190. Heavy mutton sold to $90 and hoggets to $123.

MT. GAMBIER COMBINED AGENTS STORE CATTLE SALE 10/03/23

A larger than advertised yarding of 2800 cattle came forward last Friday. Quality was generally very good, with some annual drafts presented. As per the national trend, prices eased from the February sale. Feedlotters were present but operated at lower rates. Locals and lower southeast competition absorbed most of the cattle. Heavy steers over 400kg $1570-$1810. Weaner steer $1280-$1670. Heavy heifers $1250-$1480. Weaner heifers sold well $980-$1280.

Quotations: Glenford Poll Her strs $1850. AW & BM Paget Ang weaners $1540 and $1410. RK & SM Johnson Poll Her strs $1480-$1420. GM & MM Howard Ang x str weaners $820-$970 and Hfr weaners $820-$1000.
